The Harley-Davidson Sportster series has been in production since 1957 and is therefore one of the classics in the range. It has its origins in the K models and was initially delivered with the Ironhead, and later with various versions of the Evo XL engine with a choice of 883 cm³ or even 1200 cm³ displacement. The current frame has been in use since 2004, followed by fuel injection in 2007 and ABS and the H-D Can-Bus system in 2014.

Harley-Davidson Sportsters are powered by a 45° V-twin four-stroke engine with both connecting rods sharing a common crankpin. Unfortunately, the original Sportster variants will no longer be built in Europe since 2020, as the engine does not meet the stricter Euro 5 emissions standards.

Harley-Davidson responds to this with the Harley-Davidson Sportster S, this was introduced in 2021 and has a completely newly developed engine, the Revolution Max. This is a V-twin engine with double overhead camshafts and liquid cooling. This was first fitted to the Pan America Adventure Bike in February 2021.

A variant of the Revolution Max engine - called 1250T - was installed in the new Harley-Davidson Sportster S. This makes the Sportster S the first motorbike in the Sportster range to receive a new engine since 1986.
