Safely on the road with the right motorbike handlebars

Motorbike handlebars are more important than many people initially think. Almost all the operation of a machine takes place on the motorbike handlebars. Braking, clutching and accelerating are just some of the functions that are operated from the handlebars. Motorbike handlebars are not only very important from a technical point of view, they also make a big difference visually. However, the standard handlebars are rather functional and do not have much to offer visually. Yet the handlebars are one of the most visible parts of your motorbike. Many bikers want to customise their motorbike to their liking. Components such as the tank, the exhaust or even the handlebars are replaced. MOTEA offers you a wide selection of motorbike handlebars in a wide variety of shapes and colours to create your perfect custom bike.

Is a motorbike handlebar subject to registration?

New motorbike handlebars must be registered. This is done with an ABE or a parts certificate. You should be able to present an expert opinion, especially for larger and more complex conversions. Otherwise, your machine will not be authorised for road traffic. Please note that the maximum handle height is 500 mm above the seat. It is important that the steering works properly after a conversion. This means that the handlebars must move freely and must not pinch. Especially if you want to replace the handlebars yourself, you should pay attention to the installed cables. You can quickly pinch them during the conversion. You should also have a basic knowledge of electrical engineering in order to reconnect the cables correctly after the conversion.

You should pay attention to this with your motorbike handlebars

When buying new motorbike handlebars, you should pay particular attention to three things. The handlebar width, the three-dimensional bend and the distance between the steering head bearing and your hands. This is because the handlebars have a significant influence on your riding position and therefore also your comfort.

Handlebar width

The handlebar width is decisive for the leverage of your handlebars. A wide handlebar offers more leverage and you have to use less force to steer through a bend. This is particularly advantageous if you ride a lot of bends and at higher speeds. Narrow motorbike handlebars, on the other hand, are much more agile. The handlebars therefore offer you better manoeuvrability. This can be an advantage in cities. However, the rider requires significantly more effort to move the handlebars.

Three-dimensional bend

This depends on how your new handlebars are bent. If the bend is correct, you should be sitting comfortably. The three-dimensional bend is particularly important for ergonomic riding. Many bikers find it more comfortable to ride with handlebars that are slightly tilted backwards. In this case, the handlebar ends point downwards. There is no general answer as to which type of bend makes the most sense. Always make sure that the handlebars are also approved for your motorbike model. Otherwise, the choice of motorbike handlebars depends on your own preferences.

Distance between the steering head bearing and hands

The distance between the steering head bearing and your hands is crucial for comfort. If the distance between the steering head bearing and your hands is too great, your arms will be overstretched and will tire more quickly. If, on the other hand, the distance is too short, cramps can occur. If your handlebars are too low for you, we recommend fitting a handlebar riser. Your height and the type of bike play an important role in the optimum handlebar position. Especially if you are very tall, you should make sure that your handlebars are set high enough. MOTEA offers you a wide selection of motorbike handlebars from brands such as Craftride, Tourtecs and Zaddox.

Why should you attach handlebar weights to your motorbike?

You can attach handlebar weights to the ends of your motorbike handlebars to reduce the vibration transmitted through the handlebars while riding. This minimises fatigue in the rider's hands and arms. This can make a big difference, especially on long journeys. At the same time, handlebar weights on the motorbike improve your riding stability and comfort while riding. The handlebar ends can also look great. Thanks to the countless possibilities of shapes, colours and designs, handlebar weights offer the ideal solution for customising your bike. Because not every motorbike handlebar is suitable for every bike. So when buying handlebars, make sure they are compatible with your motorbike. Why not combine your new handlebars with new motorbike grips to round off your customisation?
